An underworld crime boss has been using Facebook to run an organized crime and drug empire for the past two months, the London Times reports. Colin Gunn is known as one of Britain's most dangerous criminals, and is currently imprisoned in a maximum-security jail. He is serving a 35-year sentence for conspiracy to murder two grandparents.
Gunn, 42, had over 500 friends on Facebook, and also used the social networking site to threaten and intimidate his enemies. In one Facebook posting he wrote: “I will be home one day and I can’t wait to look into certain people’s eyes and see the fear of me being there.”
Gunn claims that prison officials allowed him to set up a Facebook account, which he updated on a daily basis. However, Britain's Justice Secretary's department said that social networking sites are not allowed in jail, and that Gunn had no permission to create the Facebook account. Jack Straw, Britain’s Justice Secretary, says he will crack down on Facebook use by prisoners.
Gunn's Facebook account was shut down on Friday, after the Times report came out.
