YouTube has faced a lot of criticism from parents and safety groups over kids easily accessing inappropriate videos. Children can find sexually explicit, violent, and other dangerous content on the popular video site. Currently, YouTube relies on its users to follow community guidelines and to 'flag' videos they feel are inappropriate.
YouTube announced it is adding parental controls so parents can block their children's access to unsuitable videos on the site. The parental controls, called 'Safety Mode,' will block content that contains violence, nudity, pornography, and drug use. While the parental controls will improve online safety for kids on the site, YouTube admits that filtering its millions of videos will be difficult.
Also, Safety Mode needs to be turned on for every browser that you use on your computer (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.), and for each account on YouTube. Safety Mode won't work if you're in private browsing mode – a way to visit online sites without leaving any history. Most browsers have a way to disable private browsing mode, so parents will need to learn how to turn it off and how to properly use Safety Mode for it to be an effective online safety tool.
